What to Ask Before You Hire a Custom Software Team
2 October 2026Webbaaz Editorial

Most software proposals look similar on a slide: a timeline, a stack, and a price. The difference shows up after kickoff, when a decision is late, a third-party API changes, or the person who understood the business is no longer on the call. Ask about that part before you sign.
Who owns the work when the project ends
You should leave with the repository, the environments, the design files, and a written note of what is custom versus what is a paid service. If a vendor hosts the code on an account you cannot access, you do not have a product. You have a rental.
Code in a repository your company controls
Staging and production access documented, not held by one person
A handover that includes how to deploy, not only how to log in
How decisions get made in the first month
Ask who joins the weekly review, how scope changes are priced, and what happens when a requirement is still fuzzy. A team that can say “we will not build that yet” is usually safer than a team that says yes to every screen. The first sprint should prove the risky part of the product, not the logo and the settings page.
